Bidar

Old World at its Best

Bidar is a small district situated along the Manjira river valley, blessed with a rich history and culture. It has long been known as a centre of learning for various creeds. The monuments here reflect the architecture of the Bahamani dynasty. Bidar is also well worth a visit by itself, given the greenery around.

Bidar was once part of the Chalukyan Empire after which it was successively taken over by several rulers. It was the capital of the Bahamani kingdom composed of Bijapur, Gulbarga, Bidar, Golconda and Birar that were once ruled by Barid Shahi.   Aurangzeb annexed the territory in 1656. Later, the Nizams of Hyderabad took over the rule. Under the Lingayat reformer Basavanna, Bidar experienced a ‘religious revolution.’
