The Fishermen of Vizhinjam
One of the most famous fishing harbors in Kerala, Vizhinjam is frequented by those who love to watch fishermen venturing into the sea in the early hours of the morning. Vizhinjam is preserved in its original rusty way, offering another panorama altogether. The 18th century rock cut temple, near Vizhinjam is another attraction here.
One can taste traditional dishes from the fishing villages here and the menu includes a rich variety of squirrelfish, piranhas, lionfish, surgeonfish, clownfish, giant turtles, moon wrasse, butterfly fish, trigger fish as well as sharks.
The Historical Kappad Beach
Located about 17 kilometers from Calicut Town, Kappad beach is historically famous for being the scene where Vasco Da Gama first landed in 1498. The beach has safe waters with small waves, and again is a spot where you can see traditional fishing in catamarans. One can take an enjoyable walk in the evening on the rocky headland stretching a few kilometers into the sea. There is also an 800-year-old temple in the beach, which will give you a glimpse to its rich past.
The best way to reach Kappad is along the backwaters of Kozhikode, offering you a bewitching treat of its beauty. The beach is quite and not much crowded; altogether a serene place to relax.
Port at Beypore Beach
Famous for building the traditional wooden ships called Urus, Beypore’s history dates back centuries old. It was a buy port and was very active in trade relations with the Middle East and romans. The Beypore beach is a quiet stretch of golden sand and there is a kilometer long bridge stretching into the sea. One can take a walk along this bridge enjoying the wind and sunset. Another main attraction is a spot near the bridge where you can see the Chaliyar River merging with the sea.
