Breathtaking Bijapur
Bijapur is best known for its numerous monuments scattered all over, reflecting Islamic architecture in its true splendor. Palaces, mausoleums, mosques, forts; Bijapur has it all in king size. The Gol Gombaz here is quite a spectacle, a huge dome, unsupported by pillars. It is reputed to be the second largest dome in the whole world. Don’t forget to check out the amazing acoustics of this hall while you are here.
Bijapur was under the Chalukyan rulers between the 10th and the 11th centuries. The city was called ‘Vijayapura’ or the city of victory then. It was successively annexed by the Delhi Sultans and the Bahamanis later. Bijapur was ruled by the Adil Shahi rulers between the 15th and the 17th centuries till the Mughals under Aurangzeb took over the kingdom. All the picturesque monuments in Bijapur were built during Adil Shah’s dynasty.
