Chennai

Chennai, The Gateway to South India

Chennai, the erstwhile seat of Madras Presidency, is today the 4th largest city in India. Acclaimed widely as the “Gateway to the South”, the city is a buzzing metropolis that is rapidly growing, expanding and vigorously changing. Chennai has come a long way from being a sleepy fishing hamlet to a place of glamour and grace. Chennai of the 21st century offers a picture of grand luxury hotels, modern shopping malls, cutting edge industries and fine places to dine and entertain. This is one such rare place, offering a perfect blend of old and new, balancing both traditional and modern outlooks with perfect agility.

The city of Madras (presently Chennai) was founded by the East India Company in the year 1639. Madras gave the British their first serious foothold on the Indian soil. Fort St. George, built as a small fortified warehouse, later became the epicenter from where the company flourished. Madras holds a distinct place in India’s history. It is here the East India Company made its first grand profits and recruited their first native armies.
