The Edakkal caves are situated on the western side of Ambukuthimala, hill twelve kilometres south-west of the town of Sultan’s Battery, and about six kilometres east of Ambalawayal in the Wayanad District of Kerala. General elevation of the ground is some 1200 metres above the mean sea level, and the peak of Ambukuthimala at over 500 metres above the surrounding area is easily identifiable from a considerable distance. It is known to lie on an ancient route connecting the high ranges of Mysore to the ports of Malabar.
